Police detains man with gun near CM Mamata's house in Kalighat

A serious security incident occurred late Thursday night near the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the highly sensitive Kalighat area, when a man identified as a school teacher was intercepted by police with a weapon. The man, later identified as 51-year-old Debanjan Chatterjee, a resident of Salt Lake City, was stopped by officers.

Upon searching his bag, police discovered what was described in the initial reports as a "pistol," but was later confirmed by the official police report to be an air gun. Chatterjee was immediately detained and taken to the Kalighat Police Station for intense interrogation to ascertain his intentions and to ensure there was no broader threat to the Chief Minister's security.

During questioning, Chatterjee disclosed that he is associated with the Serampore Rifle Club, suggesting a potential legitimate reason for possessing an air gun, which is typically used for sport shooting and training. Chatterjee also revealed his professional identity, stating that he is employed as a teacher at the prestigious Don Bosco School. After concluding their inquiry, the authorities decided to release Debanjan Chatterjee.
